Mastiff Dogs
Dogs have always been referred to as "man's best friend."
Countless people all over the world have made a dog a part of their family. With so many breeds to
choose from, finding the right dog can be a difficult task. One of the breeds that have been gaining
popularity are mastiff dogs. With an interesting heritage and a great
personality they are sure to continue in popularity as time continues.
Mastiff dogs are characterized by a large, powerful, well
proportioned frame. They give the illusion of something of grandeur and dignity. Born and bred in
England, they are known for being good natured and happy animals. They love to be around people and
easily attach to their "family." Due to this reason, they were used as watchdogs for almost two
thousand years. Interesting enough, as early as 3000 B.C. there was representation of mastiff dogs
drawn on monuments in Egypt. Shortly thereafter, even Julius Caesar took notice of these great animals.
Seems that somewhere around 55 B.C. he became intrigued by their courage. It is said that he took a few
mastiffs back with him to Rome to fight. Sometime after that, mastiffs became popular with England's
poorer residents and helped them protect what little home and belongings they had.
Considering a mastiff dog for your home? Considering their good nature and gentleness,
they would be a wonderful option for almost anyone. One thing to take into consideration though,
because of their massive size they will need some room to move around and exercise. Whether being a
male or a female, mastiff dogs are large by nature. Usually weighing
between one hundred and fifty and one hundred and sixty pounds. Though it is not at all unusual for a
male mastiff to exceed two hundred pounds. Obviously, a small apartment or small home may not be the
best environment for this breed. They need to be exercised and stretch their legs on a frequent basis.
The best scenario would be a medium sized to larger home with a backyard. This will allow both you and
your mastiff the best environment for bonding with each other and creating a long lasting healthy
relationship together. Other than the space needed, these dogs are low maintenance, and will usually
live anywhere between ten and twelve years.
Welcoming a dog into your family is a major commitment. If the mastiff breed is near
and dear to your heart, make sure that you can provide him with the best possible environment.
Mastiff dogs love easily and are sweet, good natured animals wanting
to be part of a family. If you make the decision to have one in your home, you are in for a
wonderful treat. Both you and your new best friend will definitely make long and lasting memories
together.
